What is Bokashi?

Bokashi is a product that was developed in Japan where landfill is not an option. Recycling food waste becomes easy with bokashi. There are 3 main microbes in the active ingredient of bokashi, EM® (effective microorganisms); yeast, lactic acid bacteria and phototrophic bacteria. The yeast and lactic acid bacteria are fermentation starters. These microbes stop the food waste from rotting and smelling. The phototrophic microbes are essential to combine nitrogen and carbon in the composting process.

What makes Bokashi Bran® the best bokashi available?

Bokashi Bran® is proudly South African and locally manufactured in Gauteng. They only use the original EM® technology from EMRO, Japan. All microbes used to manufacture our Bokashi Bran® bokashi are found in South Africa. No microbes are physically flown from overseas. If it does not say “Bokashi Bran®”, with the registered trademark, it’s not Bokashi.

Why is food waste recycling so important?

Food waste is harmful to the environment if disposed of at a landfill site. It generates methane, gas, and leachates, which contaminate the groundwater. For every tonne of food waste that is disposed of at the landfill, 627kg of CO2 emissions are released into the atmosphere versus only 10kg if food waste is composted – a saving of 98% in greenhouse gas emissions. Separating food waste at the source makes recycling paper, tin, glass, and plastic easy.
